Jim Magee OAM’s commitment to community has defined his life in Australia.

Arriving from Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1970, Jim and his family embraced the opportunities of their new home, building a life grounded in hard work, resilience and service. Those early experiences shaped his deep appreciation for community connection and the unifying power of sport.

For decades, Jim has been actively involved in local sport, believing strongly that participation builds confidence, friendships and opportunity for people of all abilities. His commitment to inclusion is simple and unwavering: everyone deserves the chance to belong, to contribute and to play.

As a long-serving Councillor and three-time Mayor at the City of Glen Eira, Jim has consistently championed investment in community sport, accessible facilities and grassroots programs that strengthen local clubs. He has worked to ensure that council services and sporting infrastructure are designed with inclusion at their core — not as an afterthought, but as a starting point.

In 2025, Jim was honoured to receive the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to local government and the community. He regards the recognition as a tribute to the volunteers, families and community leaders who give their time to make local sport welcoming and accessible.

Supporting Inclusive Cricket

In 2026, Jim will undertake the Camino de Santiago, walking the full Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France across Spain to Santiago, and continuing on to Finisterre and Muxía on the Atlantic coast — a journey of more than 900 kilometres.

This walk is more than a personal challenge. It represents a commitment to raising awareness and vital funds for the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association, supporting inclusive cricket opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.
